My great grandmother was murdered in Chicago in 1929 by (as the story goes) a spurned admirer who shot her and then tried to gas himself. As I was researching this I thought it would be big news back then, but I found it got a few paragraphs in a couple of local papers and wasn't really that big of a deal. Things are not that much different now I reckon.
