Clown City Update 🤡
Typical. Brag about IT (whatever IT is) by making a big, splashy announcement, then proceed to step on the rake.
The article is paywalled, but here’s the short of it.
A standoff could throw a major roadblock into Bally's casino plan and Mayor Lori Lightfoot's vision for the gambling complex to eventually deliver hundreds of millions of dollars in new annual tax revenue to help plug the city's underfunded pension gap. Alden's ability to hold out and potentially delay the casino project also raises questions about whether city officials underestimated the obstacles on the Freedom Center site when it selected the Bally's proposal last year from a handful of bidders. (full story)
The casino thing should have been done in the 90s, but now the only thing that’s a sure bet here, is that we’re going to get screwed one way or another.
Cops Cops Cops
It’s getting close to crunch time so nonsensical statements are only going to become more nonsensical. Admittedly, we don’t watch a lot of TV, so we’ve unfortunately missed outgoing mayor Lightfoot’s ad, but apparently, she claimed to have “put more cops on the street”.
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s recent campaign ad claims “she’s put more police on the streets.” But the city’s own data shows that claim is simply not true. The number of beat cops has declined.
Sworn police officers assigned to the city’s 22 police districts for regular patrol duties are down 19 percent since Lightfoot took office in April of 2019. That’s according to updated February 2023 data from the city’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) dashboard on sworn police officer allocation by unit.
The latest OIG data shows just 6,202 sworn officers are assigned directly to the different districts, down 1,458 officers compared to April 2019.
Twenty of the city’s 22 police districts have suffered a loss in assigned sworn officers, while 12 of them are down 20 percent or more. (full story)
Wirepoints has a point here (pun intended), but it’s likely the mayor meant she put more cops on HER street, not THE streets.
Asked if having 71 officers in Unit 544 along with the officers in the mayor’s bodyguard detail is too many, a former top City Hall aide familiar with the creation of the unit shrugged.
…
Lightfoot isn’t apologizing for the security surrounding her and her family.
She didn’t name him, but she said former President Donald Trump has a lot to do with it. (full story)
Oh… Orange Man BAD!
