Chicago Concealed Carry Update
While the CPD holds fire, armed citizens are increasingly letting the lead fly towards those engaged in making poor life choices.
After long and spotty stretches of inactivity from those who’ve jumped through all the necessary hoops to get themselves a concealed carry license, the pace of ventilation has seen a noticeable uptick as of late.
If It Sounds Like A Cluster, It Is A Cluster
Back on Thanksgiving Eve, a young woman managed to take out some would-be carjackers.
Cluster indeed. Initial reports had the 23yo sharpshooter dispatch a lead projectile into one of the assailant’s head. Unfortunately, in return she took a round to the arm as the remaining choir boys scurried from the scene. Moments later word came through that another teenager was found dead in the backseat of a stolen Kia (gasp! a stolen Kia! unlikely!) a mile or so away. What we didn’t know at the time was that the two are most likely related.
Left for dead in the back of a running, stolen Kia while the Level 1, UofC Hospital Trauma Center was only a few miles away. Nice friends.
Stat: This may be the first time a CCL holder killed two assailants.
Robble! Robble!
In the wee hours of Dec 2, a businessman opened fire on a burglar looking for a late night snack.
The 58-year-old was working late when someone took the rear door off its hinges and entered his business in the 1900 block of West Howard around 1:45 a.m. A Chicago police spokesperson said the victim tried to stop the burglar and fired several rounds, causing the burglar to run away.
Officers found shell casings inside the business and a blood trail leading away from the scene.
The case itself isn’t very noteworthy, however what is more interesting, to us anyway, is CWB was the only outlet to pick up on the story (via police scanner traffic and then subsequent follow-ups, like reporters are supposed to do) as the CPD made no mention of the incident. In Chicago, and likely elsewhere, no mention means no details equals no story.
Stat: We pick up on at least one shooting a week that goes unreported. Sometimes, it is a couple-two-tree a day. Even then, we’re still likely missing some which means the deadwood legacies and over-the-air teleprompter readers are missing even more.
They Chose… Poorly
Days later, a robbery crew who had been suspected of wreaking havoc on the near west and north sides of the city chose their next victim... poorly.
Three men got out, and one of them pointed a firearm at the man while demanding his belongings, according to a Chicago police statement. The would-be victim, who is a licensed concealed carry holder, drew his weapon and fired several rounds, striking the driver of the getaway car in the temple and another robber in the shoulder, according to police. (full story)
Later that day we found out that a total of three were shot with the ages of 15, 16 & 18 years old. Fortunately, their understudies can fill the role of the Three Wise Men for the upcoming Christmas Pageant.
Stat: Our dataset tell us that this is the first time a CCL holder hit three yutes in one incident.
Tables Turned
Finally, an offender turned the tables on the CCL holder when she broke into the victim's home, took her weapon and fatally shot her in the chest.
The woman, 22, was in her residence in the 9400 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue when another woman entered and the two began arguing just before 3:20 a.m., Chicago police said.
The intruder took a gun from the 22-year-old and shot her in the chest, police said. She was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she later died, police said.
A She vs Her fight with firearms does not happen often which leads us to believe this may be a domestic situation and not a random event. Then again, it's Chicago.
Cops vs Citizens
Unless those rumors of cops murdering everyone, but then planting the evidence on unsuspecting and mostly peaceful gangbangers is true, the data shows nearly the same amount of incidents for both cops and regulars, yet the fatality rate amongst the citizenry is markedly higher. Interesting…
Quick Note on Gun Control
Contrary to popular belief, Chicago does not have the strictest gun control laws in the country. While that argument may have held true in years past, especially for the 30 or so years of a de facto handgun ban in Chicago proper, Illinois has been a "shall issue" (vs “may issue”) state when it comes to concealed carry since Jan 1st, 2014.
Besides, as our data collection has shown over the past (almost) 10 years, laws mean very little to the mostly peaceful yet often violent who roam the streets of Chicago and elsewhere.
White Elephant Gifts They'll Fight Over
If you’re looking for a White Elephant or legit gift this season, ShopJackass has a bunch of crap that someone will love… maybe.
If you’ve made it this far, thanks for reading. Our goal is to push out one long form post a week in addition to our regular stats focused posts. Thanks and remember “We don't want nobody nobody sent”.
Hope the CPL holders all had some kind of carry insurance... Watch Kim Foxx magically decide to prosecute the second a white CPL holder decides to make use of the second amendment.
This offshoot of HJ has a decidedly SCC feel to it, and I'm liking it.
